Big Bear’s famous Oktoberfest celebration kicks off this weekend with a tribute to America’s Hero’s. All past and present military, law enforcement, and firefighters, and their immediate families, will be admitted free on Saturday and Sunday, September 15th and 16th. The opening festivities will include a special tribute to the men and women who help protect America.
If you like German beer Oktoberfest in Big Bear is the place to be. There are several different imported beer selections, from light pilsners to hearty lagers, and several domestic brews. And if you have one too many, there will be a complimentary door to door shuttle, sponsored by O’Doul’s, to take you from the convention center to your cabin or hotel.
The Oktoberfest food menu includes all the authentic German favorites; bratwurst, knockwurst, sauerbraten, sauerkraut, German potato salad, and much more. A new dinner item, schweine braten, will be on the menu this year, consisting of German pork roast simmered in vegetables and wine gravy, served with Bavarian dumplings and sauerkraut.
I’ve lived in Big Bear for over 15 years and I’m embarrassed to say that last year was my first Oktoberfest – and it was really fun! I love German beer and food but I always thought the chicken dancing and polka bands would be a little too schmaltzy for my taste. The fact is that the entertainment puts you in the mood for a party and you can almost imagine being in a German village at harvest time.
For over 40 years, the tradition of Oktoberfest in Big Bear has been the fall season’s favorite event for both locals and visitors. German beer, food, and entertainment will be featured at the Big Bear convention center for six weekends starting September 15th and continuing through the last weekend in October.
